Caprice Flying Competition
Sorry it’s been a while but hopefully this summer we can organise some fun competitions, starting with the Caprice gliders. We will hold the competition at Ringstone Edge, and we will need to wait until we have the right weather conditions. We need a steady wind on the slope for this completion to work
There will be two categories: Free Flight and RC.
- Free flight. This is very simple. The owner launches the model into wind off the slope, trimmed to turn slightly. The idea is to fly as far back from the slope as possible, and the distance will be paced out from start point to landing point. Each glider will be allowed three rounds, and the accumulated distance of the best two rounds will count. There will be some time for testing and trimming prior to the competition starting for the free flight models in particular, as trimming will be the essence of success or failure in this comp.
- A maximum of 2 RC channels is allowed. In this case we will play “Glider Golf”. I have six plastic hoola-hoops and following launch on the slope the pilot will have 2 minutes to gain height and is then to land inside the hoop. If conditions are marginal, the time for gaining height may be extended. If the pilot misses the hoop, the must relaunch from where they landed, into wind, and try again. Each attempt will count, as in golf as a “shot”. If the glider lands part in and part out of the hoop the judge will apportion a “shot” to the score in proportion to the accuracy of the landing. So, if the glider is judged to be 50% inside the hoop the judge will add ½ a shot to your score. If less than 25% of the glider is inside the hoop, that counts as a miss, and you must launch again. The winner will be the pilot who has taken the fewest “shots” to complete the course. If time allows, we will hold two rounds.
I am thinking to hold this mid-week as most people are busy at weekends. Feedback on this please? I would also like to get a count of those people interested in participating.
